Guided by nature, the LA-based band, The Lynx Technique, finds ways to attune their animal instincts to this electro-charged terrasphere (aka planet earth!). The band's name was inspired by the endangered North American Lynx and the spirit the animal represents. Ever-striving to strike a balance between the kinetic and the potential, their sound is inspired not only by what can be identified by the senses but also by tapping into what is beyond sensing and comprehension. With nature as their guide, they allow themselves to be led to by its power with every step. Their up and coming album will illustrate the next leg of their colorful journey.
The Lynx Technique is a ROCK band. Yes, it's driven on the best sounding upright piano at a glendale piano store and drums lead the way and yes the cello is brooding, swinging with moments of burlesque, bluesy distortion, or twang, even the glockenspiel, but when they ask... the answer is always going to be ROCK. The word ROCK works because it gives your ears a white canvas to splatter what ever you want on it, with what ever instrument, it opens the doors to the mood swings that you'll find your self feeling.
A sneak peak is available on myspace. Songs like "Whiskey and Wine" illustrate beautiful vocals. Other songs like "Hyphens" illustrate the bands piano driven, cello driven songs. Comparisons have been made with Arcade Fire, Fiona Apple and Feist.
Their EP, Algebra, is available everywhere digitally including itunes, amazon and emusic. Algebra, includes lots of farfisa and pop song appeal was recorded and produced at Infrasonic Studios with Jeff Eherenberg and Pete Lyman. Songs like Planet Earth with lyrics like, "the trees are speaking to me" explains what is to be learned from the school of The Lynx Technique.
Their new album, Academy of the Lynx, is going to be available on itunes and all the other digital distribution locations this fall via the bands own label, United Notes. The Lynx Technique is April Latragna on vocals and piano , Shelina Brown on Guitar and long time drummer, Grace Umali. April Laird and Rose Shawhand from Wells of Rickett are the duo that lends there hands at the cello and bass on the new EP Academy of the Lynx. Also another friend and guest on the songs are Geoff Hildy from Hands who actually claps his hands on the song, Photos in a Box.
The Lynx Technique won the Henry Miller Library, Big Sur song writing contest, an excuse to do their favorite lynx like thing which is hiking before all the beautiful california state parks like Julia Pfieffer State Park get closed. News update: looks like we are going to be ok! http://www.savestateparks.org/
